World’s oldest Cistercian monastery

Stift Rein is the world’s oldest Cistercian monastery. Monks have been “praying & working” here according to the rules of Saint Benedict since the year 1129. Precious manuscripts and documents of great significance to the emergence of Styria are stored in the monastery library.

The grave of the founder and first sovereign, the margrave Leopold I., also leads to the beginnings of Styria’s history. In the course of the tour, visitors gain insights into how the first monks made the land arable and what tasks today’s monks pursue.

Guests are welcomed by the monks and take part in the choral prayer at 12 noon after the tour.
